Drug Smuggled In Child’s Drawing

A security alert from one county jail to another to watch out for crayon drawings that may be laced with a drug resulted in felony charges against a mother and son in Somerset County.

Inmates ingest the drug simply by picking it off the drawing and eating it, according to jail officials.

On Feb. 19, 2009, Roaxanne Lee Kyle, 44, Thomas Street, Meyersdale, mailed a child’s crayon drawing to her son, Keith Kyle, 24, who was incarcerated in the Somerset County Jail, according to Warden Tom Perrin.

“Because of the security alert the day before, I became suspicious when I saw a child’s coloring in a piece of mail,” he said.

Jail officials inspect inmate mail for contraband. The drawing was confiscated, he said.

Somerset Borough police sent the drawing to a lab in Greensburg for analysis of the materials used to create a smiling face with hair. The drawing contained buprenorphine, which is contained in the drug Suboxone, he said.

  1. Suboxone is used to keep people from going thru withdrawals. I wonder what is worse…a junkie going crazy while locked up, or one not feeling the urge? You do not get high off suboxone.
